SEO Questions You Should Be Asking
As one of the top SEO companies in Chicago, we field a lot of questions about how to optimize business websites.
Apart from the occasional business owner who thinks SEO can magically shoot their site to the top search position overnight, most of the questions we receive are normal, reasonable inquiries about how SEO can improve online visibility, market share, etc.
But unfortunately, the majority of the questions we get aren’t the questions our clients should be asking.
Even though SEO isn’t rocket science, it can be complicated. At a minimum, it requires a semi-sophisticated approach that focuses on the details – and questions – many web marketing strategies overlook.
If you are intent on doing better in the search results, here are a few questions to ponder.
- What are we trying to achieve? When we ask clients what they hope to achieve through SEO, the answer is almost always, “More traffic.” Although SEO will inevitable create more traffic, it’s important to be more specific. Is your goal to rise to the top of search rankings or is it to increase the quality of the visitors who land on your site?
- Is it possible to get my site to the top position in search engine rankings? It’s theoretically possible to move any site to the top position in the search engines. The question is whether you’re willing to do what is required to get there. In some cases, the cost and effort it takes to advance to the top position doesn’t make sense, especially if you can achieve a better ROI by targeting a position within the top five or by focusing on longer key phrases that can yield equivalent or better results.
- Which SEO techniques are most beneficial to my site? There are multiple techniques the visibility of your site on search engines. Since not every technique is appropriate for every site, you’ll need professional help to decide which techniques are most beneficial for achieving your goals.
- How can I measure the effectiveness of individual SEO strategies? To some degree, SEO is accomplished through trial-and-error. But it is possible to create well-defined SEO goals and relentlessly track progress against those goals, doing whatever it takes to win on key search terms.
