One of Walker Sands’ DEI initiatives in 2019 is to further build relationships with academic, club and professional organizations to cultivate a more diverse candidate pipeline. Because we often hire from our internship program (more than a third of Walker Sands employees started as interns), hosting university students is one way we fuel this pipeline.
Interns at Walker Sands don’t fetch coffee or spend long hours clip searching. Our interns do real, meaningful work for real clients. They become active members of their teams, sit in on client meetings and brainstorms, and contribute their ideas. Long story short, our interns learn a lot and feel like an integral part of the agency in no time.
In Q1, we were proud to welcome several universities and student groups to our newly-renovated Chicago office, and meet with others virtually. During visits, students hear firsthand from employees across the agency who started in our internship program. Students have the opportunity to ask questions about Walker Sands, agency life and transitioning from college to full-time work. This quarter, we even hosted a video workshop with After School Matters students where our video team explained the ins and outs of video production and even showed the group how to make their very own gif.
