Intel Acquires German Drone Startup Ascending Technologies – TechCrunch

Intel hit the ground running in 2016, announcing Monday that it has purchased Ascending Technologies, a Germany-based company that produces small drones and related software. Intel’s acquisition of the company is the latest in a number of investments in newer technology such as activity trackers and smart eyewear. The announcement also comes on the heels of recent developments around drone regulations and safety concerns.

Twitter Considering 10,000-Character Limit for Tweets – Re/code

In a move set to rock the social media world, Twitter is developing a new feature that will let users tweet beyond its 140-character limit, which has been a defining aspect of the platform’s personality since its launch in 2006. According to sources close to the company, Twitter is expecting to roll out the feature near the end of Q1, and is even considering setting the new limit at 10,000 characters.

Snapchat is building an ad technology platform – Digiday

In more social media news, Snapchat is building an application programming interface, or API, that would grow its digital ad business. An API would allow third-party advertisers to buy ads with greater precision and frequency. By developing an API, Snapchat aims to grow opportunities for e-commerce on the platform, and follows in the footsteps of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

The coolest wearables at CES 2016 are hidden in Samsung's booth – CNET

The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, kicked off in Las Vegas on Wednesday to great fanfare. As an internationally renowned electronics and technology trade show, CES attracts thousands of participants from all over the world and showcases the industry’s most exciting innovations. Samsung this year wowed attendees with their wearable devices, solar panel technology, “smart clothing” and more.

Apple Buys Artificial-Intelligence Startup Emotient – Wall Street Journal

Apple announced Thursday it has purchased San Diego-based Emotient Inc., a startup that uses artificial intelligence technology to assess and interpret people’s emotions through facial expressions. Although it’s not immediately clear what Apple plans to do with the technology, industry experts expect there to be wide-ranging applications for marketing and advertising.
