HIRING GROWTH RATE FALLS AT SMALL BUSINESSES: Hiring by small businesses increased 0.3 percent during 2005, compared with 4.4 percent growth in 2004, according to SurePayroll, a national online payroll service.

Salaries nationwide were down 0.5 percent in 2005, at $29,126, compared with a 4.8 percent drop in 2004.

In California, the number of employees at small companies was up 0.7 percent, and the average paycheck was down 0.7 percent at the end of December, compared with the end of 2004.

At the end of 2005, 3.26 percent of small-business workers were independent contractors, compared with 3.2 percent at the beginning of the year.
