| Ted Schuster The DePaul Entrepreneur Winter 2004 Summary: Need help with PR? If you are looking for a great PR firm, you've found one. Walker Sands is a leading Chicago PR firm with a strong track record that makes it one of top national PR agencies.. "Entrepreneurs know the shortest distance between thought and action," says DePaul University Marketing MBA alum Glen-Eric Nelson. "By applying swift and focused entrepreneurial thinking to marketing strategy, businesses can readily outsmart and outmaneuver any competitor - large or small - in the battle for market share." Nelson should know. He's helped build successful start-ups and also has led marketing and communications programs for market leaders, such as Accenture, Cisco Systems, BearingPoint, and Amoco. Nelson is now applying his energies as a marketing consultant and branding strategist for Walker Sands Communications, a firm he co-founded with Ken Gaebler, who's a consummate entrepreneur, former McKinsey executive and Yale MBA alum. Nelson, an NIU journalism grad, earned his DePaul MBA in 1989, while he led public relations for Zenith Data Systems. He feels the MBA program prepared him well for dealing with C-level executives with global marketing challenges. After completing the DePaul MBA, Nelson joined SSA, then a publicly traded supply-chain software firm. "Without the MBA, there's no way I could have provided the level of counsel necessary to help position the firm and market its complex solutions." Nelson then went on to Accenture, and later to the largest marketing firm in Silicon Valley, where he led programs for Cisco and BearingPoint. He then turned his sights back to Chicago, joining Internet start-up Beautyjungle.com, which he helped become the 4th best online reseller (according to a FORTUNE published study). There, Nelson met Ken Gaebler, one of Beautyjungle.com co-founders. The two now work with a team of 10 other entrepreneurial-minded executives who provide marketing counsel and tactical support for technology, healthcare and business services firms. Nelson also supports Allstate as a brand strategist. Walker Sands is a rising star in Chicago. When asked about his most unusual assignment lately, he mentioned their firm was the marketing engine behind the "Iraqi most-wanted" playing cards, helping their client gain visibility while the market was hot. Nelson and the Walker Sands team know how important it is to play your best card now. "Around Walker Sands, enterpreneurism is a mindset and work ethic, not a business condition," Nelson says. "Today's business leaders must convey a passion and fortitude to address tough market challenges head on. Those are the types of clients we like to work with, because we know how they think and what they demand. Whether in a dynamic start-up or market-leading gorilla, these entrepreneurs are what make their company great. And we want to help them make the most of every moment."
