Staying Creative in a World of Opinions

Lately, I have found that I am experiencing a bit of social media overload. I haven’t been as active on Twitter as I used to be, and I just need a break from all the noise that comes from a social world sometimes. With all of the opinions out there, I needed to take a step back from the countless blog posts and comments. When you see the same topics and ideas shared over and over again, how do you break free from the routine and stay creative with ideas?

When I recently Stumbled Upon the image to the right (literally), I felt it was a great set of tips to breaking free from a routine and getting creative again.

Here are some of the key things I took from it:

Power off

Sometimes, the best way to spark creativity is to step away from your computer and go explore something. You never know where creativity will hit you, and most of the places I find true inspiration and creativity are not in front of a computer screen. Turn off your computer for the night after work one day and completely disconnect from technology. Don’t tweet every detail of your day. Take a break from sharing what you are doing and start living it.

Engage with other creative minds

Another way to get the creative sparks flying is to talk to people that you find to be doing it right. Reach out to them and see where they get inspiration from. Learn from what they do, and learn why they do what they do.

Take a trip

The best way to spark new ideas is to get out of your comfort zone. Break free from the routine you have a go to a place you have never been before. This could bring you new ideas, a new outlook on things, or even a new perspective.

Write all of your ideas down

No matter how grandiose or minuscule it is, if you have an idea, write it down. It might lead you to an even better idea somewhere down the line, or you could collaborate with someone else on a concept. Write down any and every idea you come up with.

Never stop learning

When I graduated college last year, I didn’t think I would be learning so much more from experiences outside the classroom instead of inside one. Textbooks or not, you are a student your entire life. That being said, find books that interest you, music that inspires you, and friends that will push you to do better.

You can never learn too much.

  1. One of my favorite things to do is play video games or veg out on movies. Had really good luck with concerts too.

  2. I agree! Going to concerts or just listening to music helps me get creative. Thanks for the comment!
