Kenneth Cole: Watch Your Words
This morning, I was browsing the latest news and tweets on Twitter. All of a sudden, I saw several people tweeting that Kenneth Cole had made a huge social media mistake. Here is what they tweeted:
Naturally, thousands of Twitter users started lashing out at the brand, telling them that comparing their new spring collection to the crisis currently hitting Cairo is sickening, rude, and uncalled for. I personally agree with these users, making light of a situation like this is the worst thing you can do. What were they thinking?
Once the backlash started, Kenneth Cole sent out another tweet:
The second tweet was their apparent stab at an apology – however the words “I’m sorry” don’t appear anywhere. Less than an hour later the twitter accounts @KennethColePR and @FakeKennethCole appeared – two twitter accounts that are tweeting out negative things about the brand.
This situation proves once again the power of social media. Think twice about what you write on the internet. Make sure you know what the consequences will be of what you say. Watch your words.
What do you think of the situation? Should Kenneth Cole issue a public apology? What would you do?
